The men have geared up for the battle. The snake boats are all ready to go. Since 1952 second Saturday of August is looked up as a day of excitement and thrills. The Nehru trophy boat race, Kerala’s muchawaited regatta is held on the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha.

• The regatta is named after the then Prime Minister, the late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
• A one day event in which various teams on their snake boats compete with each other. On this particular day, the one can see thousands of spectators from around the globe.
• Chundanvallams better know as snake boats steal the spotlight on this particular day. Often measuring over 100 feet in length, with a raised prow they are majestic in themselves.
• The former colonial rulers thought these boats bore a resemblance to their European namesakes and the name snake boat stuck.
• Hundreds of spectators surging forward from their seats cheering the riders while men strike their paddles on the lake forms the thrill of the event.
