The Alleppey Backwaters and How to Best Visit Them

The Kerala backwaters is not the correct but attractive name given to the peaceful and beautiful palm-lined network of lakes, rivers, and small and big canals that run inland from the coast of Kerala, from Kochi (Cochin) to Kollam Quilon. The main starting point, situated between Kochi and Kollam, is Alleppey. At the heart of the backwaters is vast and famous Vembanad Lake.

In old times, local people make use of backwaters by the transport, fishing, and agriculture etc. Annual snake boat races, held along theKerala backwaters, also provide a great source of entertainment for the village people and tourists alike.

Getting to Alleppey From Kochi Airport

Allappey can be reached safely in two hours with the help of prepaid taxi that are available at the airport booth by booking tickets. If it is not convenient for you, then options like uber and ola taxis are available easily.

From above options. Unlikely the cheapest choice is the travel by the KSRTC buses. But you don’t get the buses at the available time you want, as the time is unpredictable. If you arrive at the time when there’s not a bus, you’ll find more bus travel services departing from Aluva Rajiv Gandhi Bus Station, about 20 minutes away, and the newVytilla Mobility Hub located 45 minutes away in Ernakulum.

Alternatively, Indian trains stop in Alleppey station. The railway station which is closest to Kochi airport is Aluva, opposite the bus station. Another option isthe Ernakulam South, about an 1 hour away.

How to Experience the Backwaters

The visitors who intend to visit alleppey backwaters will surely hire a tradition style kerala houseboats (called kettuvallam). It is the major part of backwaters of Kerala. Options for Tourist Cruises

The cheapest option for travelling through the backwaters is on the Alleppey District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) tour between Alleppeyand Kollam. The journey takes eight hours and the boat departs daily at 10.30 a.m. from the DTPC boat jetty. Daily from the kollam, departure time is the same.The cost is 300 rupees per head. The interesting spot is the Matha Amrithanandamayi Mission of the Hugging Mother.
